Stay seated with the seat belt on during community travel
When to use this goal
For students in community-based instruction or work programs who unbuckle, stand, or open doors in the school van or car. Measures continuous time seated and buckled. Base the choice on timed trips. Travel training (routes, fares) is in community-safety.
- Baseline
- Time the longest stretch seated and buckled on 3 to 5 trips, and note when and why the student unbuckled (a stop sign, a song ending, arriving). Trips should start short. Confirm the vehicle's belts fit and that the student can buckle them; an OT may need to help.
- Tips
- Mastery is every trip because an unbuckled passenger in a moving vehicle is dangerous. The driver pulls over if the student unbuckles; that is the plan's procedure, not a consequence, and the stop is recorded. A chosen activity and a predictable route make longer trips reachable. Never a goal that substitutes for an appropriate restraint system where one is medically required.
- Limits
- Trips vary in length; record the trip length with each data point and set the target below the typical trip. Does not cover behavior at the destination.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, during a van or car trip for community-based instruction with an adult in the vehicle besides the driver, the student will stay seated with the seat belt buckled from departure to the stop independently for at least 20 minutes, on 5 of 5 consecutive recorded trips, as measured by duration recording collected each trip, at least twice monthly.
Baseline: 4 minutes.

Met: Unit fits the behavior. Duration fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Duration recording gives duration data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Safety Behaviors.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Start timing when the defined behavior begins and stop when it ends, using the definitions agreed by the team.
- The goal is reached when duration is at least the target (20 minutes).
- Note interruptions that weren't caused by the student.
