Turn a research question into search keywords

3-5, 6-8Percent accuracyTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For students who type whole questions or one vague word into a search engine and then scroll without finding anything useful. Present levels in finding the key words in a sentence decide fit.

Baseline
Score a keyword set correct if it includes the topic and the detail and leaves out question words. Optionally check by running the search and seeing if a useful result is on the first page.
Tips
Use questions from the student's real projects. Kid-safe search engines keep practice safe. Pair with the source-judging templates once searches return useful results.
Limits
Many keyword sets can work; agree on scoring with examples. Search engines now answer full questions well, so the skill matters most for school databases and library catalogs.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, given 8 research questions from a class project and a keyword planning sheet, the student will write 2 to 4 search keywords that name the main topic and the specific detail for each question independently with at least 75% accuracy on keyword sets, in 3 of 4 consecutive biweekly probes, as measured by work-sample analysis collected every two weeks.

Baseline: 25% accuracy.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Work-sample analysis gives percent accuracy data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Digital Literacy & Online Safety.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
