Name the food group for pictured foods

When to use this goal

For upper elementary students in health or science lessons on nutrition who mix up food groups or name only a favorite food. Present levels, not grade, decide fit. Use photos of foods the student eats at home and school, including foods from the family's culture.

Baseline
Run the 10-card sort on two or three days with a fresh mix of foods each time. Note which groups are confused (often protein and dairy, or mixed dishes) so teaching starts there.
Tips
Leave mixed dishes such as pizza or soup out at first, or accept any reasonable group. Use a plate model the school already teaches. Keep the talk about food groups neutral; avoid calling foods good or bad.
Limits
Sorting pictures does not show what the student chooses to eat; see the lunch-line template for real choices. Diet needs tied to a health condition are set by the family and medical providers, not this goal.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, given 10 photo cards of everyday foods and a five-group plate mat, the student will place each food card on its food group (fruits, vegetables, grains, protein, dairy) independently with at least 80% accuracy on food photo cards, in 3 of 4 consecutive weekly probes, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected weekly.

Baseline: 40% accuracy.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives percent accuracy data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Health Education.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
