Draw and label a science journal observation
When to use this goal
For primary students who draw during science but leave out details, labels or the date, so the journal cannot be used later to compare. Present levels in drawing and labeling with first-sound spelling show readiness.
- Baseline
- Score three recent journal entries with the rubric before setting the target. Note whether missing labels come from spelling difficulty (offer a word bank) or from not looking closely (offer a look-for prompt).
- Tips
- Score the science, not the art: details that match the object count, neatness does not. Invented spelling is fine if an adult can read the label. Students who cannot draw can photograph the object and label the photo.
- Limits
- The rubric is scored from the page and cannot show observations the student said aloud but did not record. Rubric scores from different raters drift; score a few entries together first.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, after observing a plant, insect or object during a science lesson, given a science journal page, the student will draw what they observed with at least two true details and write or dictate a label for each detail independently, earning a score of at least 7 out of 9 on a 3-row science journal rubric scored 0 to 3 per row, on 3 of 4 consecutive scored journal entries, as measured by a defined scoring rubric collected every two weeks.
Baseline: 2 out of 9 rubric points.

- Score each sample with a 3-row science journal rubric scored 0 to 3 per row. Attach or reference the rubric's score descriptors.
- Use the same prompt type and conditions for each scored sample.
- If two people score, check agreement on a few samples before relying on the data.
