Record today's weather and choose matching gear

K-2, PK, 3-5OpportunitiesTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For young students who take part in the daily weather routine but choose symbols at random or cannot link the weather to what to wear. Present levels in matching pictures and naming weather words decide fit.

Baseline
Record ten weather routines and score each one for two parts: a matching symbol and matching gear. Mixed weather days (sun and clouds) need an agreed answer before data collection starts.
Tips
Real gear (an umbrella, a hat, a jacket) works better than pictures for many students. The routine connects science to a daily living skill, so share the chart with families for home practice. Accept answers in any language or mode.
Limits
Weather is the same for many days in a row, which limits the range of practice. The goal does not cover reading a thermometer or forecasts; use a separate template for those.

Criterion

Number of opportunities in which the behavior is demonstrated, out of a fixed number.

Sample numbers. Replace them with the student's data.

Data collection

Each planned or naturally occurring opportunity is recorded as correct/independent, prompted, or not demonstrated.

Mastery rule

How many measurements must meet the criterion.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, during the morning meeting weather routine after looking out the window, the student will place the matching weather symbol on the class chart and choose one piece of clothing or gear that fits the weather independently in at least 8 of 10 opportunities, across 2 consecutive 2-week data summaries, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected daily during the weather routine, summarized every two weeks.

Baseline: 2 of 10 opportunities.

Measurability check11 of 11 met
  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Science Skills.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
