Match government branches to their jobs

When to use this goal

For students in a civics unit who can name the three branches but mix up which one makes, carries out or interprets laws. Present levels in matching words to short phrases decide fit.

Baseline
Use three cards per branch. Record whether errors confuse two particular branches (often executive and legislative), which points to the exact distinction to teach.
Tips
Headlines from local and national news make this civics in action. Include state and local examples so students see government at more than one level. Keep scenarios politically neutral.
Limits
Real government actions often involve more than one branch; choose clear cases. Sorting does not show the student can explain checks and balances.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, given 9 scenario cards about government actions (such as passing a law, a court ruling, signing a bill) and a three-branch mat, the student will sort each card to the branch of government that does that job independently with at least 78% accuracy on branch of government cards, in 3 of 4 consecutive biweekly probes, as measured by work-sample analysis collected every two weeks.

Baseline: 33% accuracy.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Work-sample analysis gives percent accuracy data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Social Studies Skills.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
