Summarize a current event article

3-5, 6-8Rubric scoreTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For upper elementary students who retell a news article as a list of details or focus on one small fact. Present levels in reading at the article's level, or access to read-aloud, decide fit.

Baseline
Score two summaries of unfamiliar articles. Note whether the why row is weak because the article does not say, and choose articles that state why it matters.
Tips
Student news sites and local news written for young readers work well. Let the student choose among two or three articles. Recorded summaries are fine when writing is a separate need.
Limits
Article difficulty varies; keep the reading level steady across probes. The rubric does not judge whether the student can tell reporting from opinion; see ca-ss-036.
