Choose the social studies term that fits

3-5, 6-8Percent accuracyTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For upper elementary students who can match unit words to definitions on a list but do not use them in sentences, so they cannot follow class discussions or texts. Present levels in reading the probe, or a read-aloud, decide fit.

Baseline
Use the last unit's terms for baseline to see what carried over, then the current unit's terms for weekly probes. Keep the sentences simple so the term is the only hard word.
Tips
Ask the social studies teacher for the essential terms at the start of each unit. Words like region, government, trade and colony return across units, so keep them in the bank.
Limits
Choosing a term in context is recognition, not use in the student's own writing. Abstract civics words are harder than concrete geography words, so expect dips between units.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, given 10 sentences about the current social studies unit, each with a blank, and a bank of 12 unit terms, the student will write or select the unit term that completes each sentence independently with at least 80% accuracy on unit term sentences, in 3 of 4 consecutive weekly probes, as measured by curriculum-based measurement probes collected weekly.

Baseline: 40% accuracy.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Curriculum-based measurement gives percent accuracy data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Social Studies Skills.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
