Tell news reports from opinion pieces

9-12, 6-8Percent accuracyTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For high school students who treat opinion columns, editorials and social media posts as news reports. Present levels in reading short articles, or access to text-to-speech, decide fit.

Baseline
Score the label and the clue as separate items. Choose pieces on the same topic so the topic does not give the answer.
Tips
Use real local and national outlets across viewpoints so the skill is about format, not politics. Pairs with digital literacy source evaluation templates.
Limits
Many pieces mix news and analysis; pick clear cases for probes. The goal does not cover checking whether facts are accurate.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, given 8 short pieces (news reports, editorials, opinion columns and posts) with headlines and source labels, the student will label each piece as news or opinion and write one clue from the piece that shows it independently with at least 88% accuracy on news and opinion labels, on 3 of 4 consecutive biweekly probes, as measured by work-sample analysis collected every two weeks.
