Work on a self-directed task for a set number of minutes in study hall
When to use this goal
For high school students whose present levels show study halls spent on phones or socializing even with work due. For students who can choose a task; pair with a planning goal if they cannot. Present levels decide the starting minutes.
- Baseline
- Time the longest continuous engaged episode across five study halls. Note what the student chose to work on and what ended the episode (phone, peer, task finished). If periods end with nothing chosen, start with ef-pl-014.
- Tips
- Engaged means working on the chosen task: reading, writing, problem solving, or using a study tool. Checking the phone for more than 15 seconds ends the episode. The student chooses the task; the adult records the episode length and the task.
- Limits
- Self-selected tasks may be the easiest ones; check that chosen tasks match what is due. Study halls vary in supervision and noise.
