Stay on a work task at a job site without redirection
When to use this goal
For transition-age students whose present levels show frequent stopping during work tasks, with a job coach restarting them. Tasks must be trained and within ability. Present levels decide the starting minutes.
- Baseline
- Have the job coach time the longest continuous working episode on several shifts and note what ends it (looking around, talking to coworkers, leaving the station). Compare across task types; repetitive tasks often show shorter episodes.
- Tips
- Working means hands on the task producing output. Brief pauses under 15 seconds do not end the episode; conversation with a coworker about the task does not either. The coach records discreetly. Share the data with the student after each shift.
- Limits
- Site conditions (noise, coworkers, supervisors) vary. Quantity produced is another useful measure that the site may already track.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, during a trained work task at a work-based learning site, the student will independently continue the assigned work task without stopping for at least 20 minutes, in 4 of 5 consecutive observed shifts, as measured by duration recording collected each shift and summarized weekly.
Baseline: 5 minutes.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Duration fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Duration recording gives duration data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Sustained Attention & Task Engagement.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Start timing when the defined behavior begins and stop when it ends, using the definitions agreed by the team.
- The goal is reached when duration is at least the target (20 minutes).
- Note interruptions that weren't caused by the student.
