Read along with audio text and check questions

When to use this goal

For high school students who use audio versions of texts as an accommodation but whose present levels show the audio playing while attention moves to other things. Use when the student's IEP already provides audio text. Present levels decide the starting minutes.

Baseline
In class, time from pressing play to the first point where the student stops following (phone use, unrelated tab, audio running past a check question unanswered). At home, use the reading app's listening log with the check questions as confirmation. Collect at least four sessions.
Tips
Check questions are short (one word or a sentence) and placed in the text or a shared document. Let the student set the playback speed; many read along faster than default. Data from home is useful but should be confirmed by in-class observations.
Limits
Audio logs show the audio ran, not that the student attended; the check questions are the evidence. Does not measure reading comprehension beyond the checks.

Criterion

How long a behavior lasts, from a defined start to a defined end.

Sample numbers. Replace them with the student's data.

Criterion wording

Data collection

The length of time a behavior lasts is timed from a defined start to a defined end.

How many measurements must meet the criterion.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, during an independent reading period with an assigned text and its audio version, the student will read along with the audio text, following the print and answering each embedded check question independently for at least 25 minutes, in 3 of 4 consecutive weekly observations, as measured by duration recording collected weekly.

Baseline: 6 minutes.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Duration fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Duration recording gives duration data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Sustained Attention & Task Engagement.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
