Answer polls and chat prompts in online class

When to use this goal

For students in live online or hybrid classes whose present levels show long silent stretches with the class window open but no responses. Use when the teacher builds regular polls, chat questions, or reaction prompts into the lesson. Present levels, not grade, decide the target.

Baseline
Most platforms keep poll results and chat logs, so the teacher can count prompts answered after class without extra recording. Count at least five classes and note the number of prompts in each; if the number varies, keep the total fixed by scoring the first eight prompts.
Tips
A response is any on-topic answer, including a guess or a question back to the teacher. Off-topic chat does not count. Camera use is a separate decision for the team and family and is not part of this goal.
Limits
Responding to prompts shows engagement at those moments, not across the whole class. Connection problems produce missed prompts; record and exclude them.

Data collection

Each occurrence of a clearly defined behavior is tallied during a fixed observation period.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, during a live online class in which the teacher posts polls, chat questions, or reaction prompts, the student will answer each teacher poll, chat question, or reaction prompt before the teacher moves on independently in at least 7 of 8 opportunities, in 4 of 5 consecutive online classes, as measured by frequency recording collected each online class and summarized weekly.

Baseline: 3 of 8 opportunities.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Frequency (event) recording gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Sustained Attention & Task Engagement.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
