Remain with the class through an assembly
When to use this goal
For students whose present levels show leaving, wandering, or turning to unrelated activities during assemblies, guest speakers, or performances. Sensory needs often matter in large rooms; plan seating and headphones first. Present levels and the event's length, not grade, decide the target.
- Baseline
- Record minutes from entering the seat area to the first unplanned departure or unrelated activity lasting more than a minute. Large events are irregular, so gather data from any event over a semester and note the room, sound level, and seat location.
- Tips
- Using the exit card for a planned break and returning is a success, not a failure; the clock pauses during the planned break. Headphones and fidgets are supports that stay as long as they help. Preview the event so the student knows when it ends.
- Limits
- Events are infrequent; data may build slowly. Loud or crowded events are a sensory question as much as an attention one; the team should address both.

Met: Unit fits the behavior. Duration fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Direct observation gives duration data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Sustained Attention & Task Engagement.

- Start timing when the defined behavior begins and stop when it ends, using the definitions agreed by the team.
- The goal is reached when duration is at least the target (40 minutes).
- Note interruptions that weren't caused by the student.
