Read every answer choice before choosing

When to use this goal

For upper elementary and middle school students who pick the first answer that looks right on multiple-choice items, missing better choices. Present levels decide fit. The strategy leaves a mark: a dot or slash by each choice read.

Baseline
Score 10 items on two quizzes for marks on every choice. Note how many errors were on items where not all choices were read. Write an operational definition first (what counts as the impulsive response and what counts as using the strategy), and teach and practice the strategy before measuring it.
Tips
Each item is one opportunity, scored from the marks. Test accommodations (a scratch sheet for online tests) make the strategy possible.
Limits
Marks show reading, not understanding. Not for items with only two choices.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, on multiple-choice classroom quizzes, the student will mark each answer choice as they read it (a dot or a slash through wrong ones) before circling an answer independently on at least 9 of 10 items, in 3 of 4 consecutive weekly probes, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected on the weekly quiz.

Baseline: 4 of 10 opportunities.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Impulse Control & Inhibition.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
