Practice weekly spelling words with a look-cover-write-check routine
When to use this goal
For early elementary students whose present levels show spelling or word lists are never practiced, or practiced only by staring at the list. The words themselves should be at the instructional level. Present levels decide the list length and whether a family can support home practice.
- Baseline
- Watch one practice session without help and score each step. Ask how the student practiced for recent tests; many have no routine at all. Compare Friday scores before and after the routine is taught to show the student that practice changes results.
- Tips
- Score a step independent when done without adult direction. Keep the routine identical at school and home so family practice reinforces it. Five to ten words per session is enough; the routine matters more than the count.
- Limits
- Measures the routine, not spelling accuracy; see spelling goals for that. Students who cannot yet read the words need a reading goal first.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given the weekly spelling or sight-word list during a 10-minute practice time at school, the student will practice the words using the look-cover-write-check routine using a routine card with pictures for each step, performing at least 5 of 6 steps independently, on 4 of 5 consecutive practice sessions, as measured by a task-analysis checklist collected twice weekly.
Baseline: 1 of 6 steps independently.

- Write the date at the top of each session column. Mark each step I, S, or N.
- Total the number of I marks for the session. The goal counts steps completed independently (target: 5 of 6).
- Use the least intrusive prompt first and record the prompt actually needed.
