Attempt every item on a test before turning it in
When to use this goal
For students whose present levels show tests turned in with blank items, including some they could have answered. Fits any test format. Separate blanks caused by not knowing from blanks caused by skipping.
- Baseline
- Review the last several tests and count blank items over total items. Ask the student about each blank: did not know, ran out of time, forgot to go back. Each reason points to a different strategy.
- Tips
- An item is attempted when it has a response that addresses it, right or wrong. Teach skip-and-mark: put a dot by hard items, finish the rest, then return. Time left at the end is for the dotted items. For multiple choice, an educated guess counts as attempted.
- Limits
- Guessing on some test formats is penalized; check the scoring rules. Attempting is not knowing; test scores belong in content goals.
