Find answers using the index and glossary

When to use this goal

For students who flip page by page or reread a whole chapter to find one fact. The student should read alphabetical lists and page numbers. Present levels, not grade, decide whether the textbook is print or digital.

Baseline
Give 10 lookup questions without teaching the strategy and score answers with a correct page number. Watch two or three lookups to see where the process breaks: picking the key word, alphabetical order, or finding the spot on the page.
Tips
The page number shows the strategy was used, not a guess. Mix print and digital texts once the print skill is steady. Make the questions short and about facts the student can find in one place.
Limits
Does not measure comprehension of what was found. Some textbooks have weak indexes; check yours first.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, given 10 lookup questions and the class textbook with an index and glossary, the student will find each answer by choosing a key word, looking it up in the index, glossary, or search box, and writing the page number with the answer independently with at least 80% accuracy on lookup questions answered with a correct page number, in 3 of 4 consecutive weekly probes, as measured by work-sample analysis collected weekly.

Baseline: 30% accuracy.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Work-sample analysis gives percent accuracy data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Study & Test-Taking Skills.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
