Take research notes from two sources

9-12, 6-8Rubric scoreTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For students writing research papers who copy whole paragraphs, lose track of where facts came from, or gather from one source only. Reading access supports should be in place. Present levels, not grade, decide the number of sources.

Baseline
Score notes from a recent research task with the rubric. If there are no notes, ask the student to take notes from one source for 15 minutes and score that.
Tips
Research checkpoints give natural data points. Source tags make citations easy later and prevent accidental plagiarism. Digital note tools with a source field work well.
Limits
Few research projects per year; use mini research tasks for more data. Does not score the final paper.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, during a research project, given a research question and access to the library databases, the student will write short-phrase research notes from at least two sources and tag each note with its source and page independently, earning a score of at least 9 out of 12 on a 4-row research notes rubric scored 0 to 3 per row, on 2 consecutive research assignments, as measured by a defined scoring rubric collected with each research checkpoint.

Baseline: 3 out of 12 rubric points.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Rubric score fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Rubric scoring gives rubric score data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Study & Test-Taking Skills.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
