Begin the bell-ringer before the teacher starts the lesson

When to use this goal

For students with several class periods a day who socialize, scroll, or sit through the warm-up and then have no entry point into the lesson. The warm-up must be posted in a consistent place.

Baseline
Ask two teachers to tally, for two weeks, whether the student had started the warm-up before the lesson began. Note which classes are worst and whether phones or seating near friends are involved.
Tips
Each class period with a posted warm-up is one opportunity. Started means a written or typed response to the first warm-up item. Teachers should keep the warm-up in the same spot (board, slide, platform) every day so finding it is not the barrier.
Limits
Depends on teachers posting a warm-up consistently and on the length of time before the lesson begins. Does not measure whether the warm-up is finished or correct.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, when a warm-up or bell-ringer is posted at the start of class, the student will start the posted warm-up before the teacher begins the lesson independently in at least 8 of 10 opportunities, across 3 consecutive weeks, as measured by direct observation collected daily in two selected classes and summarized weekly.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Direct observation gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Task Initiation.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
