Finish a short task before the timer ends
When to use this goal
For students whose present levels show short tasks at the independent level drag on past the time given, without being hard. The timer length should start near the student's current median time.
- Baseline
- Time the student on ten short tasks without a timer and use the median to set the timer. Check accuracy on those tasks; if accuracy is low, the task is too hard for a pacing goal.
- Tips
- Each timed task is one opportunity. Met means every item has a response when the timer ends. Keep tasks the same length and type during data collection. Shorten the timer in small steps after consistent success.
- Limits
- Speed can cost accuracy; check that accuracy holds. Timers can raise anxiety for some students; if effort drops when the timer appears, use a different approach.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given a short independent task at the independent level and a visual timer set for the time allowed, the student will finish every item before the timer ends independently in at least 8 of 10 opportunities, across 3 consecutive weeks, as measured by direct observation collected daily and summarized every 10 tasks.
Baseline: 2 of 10 opportunities.

Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Direct observation gives opportunities data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Time Management.
Met: Level of support. Defined.

Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Record up to 10 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
