Request more time before a deadline passes
When to use this goal
For students who see a deadline will be missed but say nothing until it passes. Asking early is a time management and self-advocacy skill. Present levels, not grade, decide fit.
- Baseline
- Look at last term's late or missing work with the student: for each piece, did they ask for more time before the due date, after it, or not at all? Teachers' grade books show the pattern.
- Tips
- Teachers agree in advance to consider requests made before the deadline. A request counts when it is made before the due date and names a new date and a plan. Where extended time is an IEP accommodation, the student still practices telling the teacher when they will use it.
- Limits
- Teachers may say no; the request still counts, since the skill is asking early. Frequent requests can signal that the workload or the plan needs to change.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, when a due date is two days away and the work is not on track, the student will ask the teacher for more time before the due date, with a new date and a plan to meet it independently in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, across 2 consecutive grading periods, as measured by direct observation collected weekly.

- Record up to 5 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
