Jot a thought down to share later

When to use this goal

For young students whose present levels show calling out ideas right away or losing them when made to wait for a turn. Use when the student has ideas to share and can draw or write a word. Present levels, not grade, decide the support.

Baseline
Each time the student shows they have an idea before their turn is one opportunity. Score whether they recorded it and shared it later. Collect at least five discussions and note how often ideas were lost or called out.
Tips
Make sure the student gets called on after jotting; a strategy that never pays off stops being used. A simple drawing or first letter counts. This fits next to an impulse-control or turn-taking goal.
Limits
Opportunities depend on the student having ideas to share; very quiet days give few data points. Does not measure the quality of contributions.

Criterion

Number of opportunities in which the behavior is demonstrated, out of a fixed number.

Sample numbers. Replace them with the student's data.

Data collection

An adult observes and records the defined behavior during a specified activity.

How often data are collected

How many measurements must meet the criterion.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, during a class discussion or read-aloud when the student has an idea before their turn, the student will draw or write a word on a sticky note or whiteboard and use it to share the idea when called on independently in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, on 4 of 5 observed days, as measured by direct observation collected three times per week.

Baseline: 1 of 5 opportunities.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Direct observation gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Working Memory Strategies.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
