Restate a classmate's idea before adding on

6-8, 3-5, 9-12OpportunitiesTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For students whose present levels show discussion comments that ignore what was just said, because the earlier comment is gone by the time they speak. Fits classes that use structured discussion. Present levels, not grade, decide the support.

Baseline
Each time the student speaks right after a classmate is one opportunity. Score whether the restatement matched the classmate's point. Collect at least five discussions.
Tips
Jotting a word while the classmate talks is a working memory support and is encouraged. Accept restatements in any language or mode. The teacher can collect data from the discussion tracker many classes already keep.
Limits
Language processing needs also affect restating; consult the SLP. Does not measure the quality of the student's own idea.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, during a structured class or small-group discussion, the student will restate the main point of the previous speaker in a few words before adding their own idea independently in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, across 3 consecutive weeks, as measured by direct observation collected twice per week.

Baseline: 1 of 5 opportunities.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Direct observation gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Working Memory Strategies.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
