Pull elastic-waist pants on while seated
When to use this goal
For young students who need an adult to put their pants on after a change, swim, or rest time. Fits when the student can sit on a low bench with feet flat and lift one foot at a time. Present levels and the OT's observation of the routine, not grade or age, decide whether this template fits.
- Baseline
- Watch the routine on at least 3 typical days before setting a target, using the clothes the student actually wears. Mark each step as independent, done with a named prompt (gesture, picture, verbal, physical), or not done, and count only independent steps. Ask the family how the child dresses at home, since many children manage sitting on the floor but not on a bench.
- Tips
- Backward chaining works well: the adult does the first steps and the student pulls the pants up to the waist, then the student takes on earlier steps. Use pants with a clear front marker such as a picture or a colored tag. Change in a private spot with a door or screen.
- Limits
- Covers elastic-waist pants only; buttons and zippers are separate goals. Balance needs may call for PT input on whether standing is safe without a grab bar.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, when changing into dry pants during a planned clothing change, the student will sit on a bench, put each foot through a leg opening, stand, and pull the pants up to the waist, performing at least 5 of 6 steps independently, on 4 of 5 observed practice days, as measured by a task-analysis checklist collected at each planned change and at practice twice weekly.

- Write the date at the top of each session column. Mark each step I, S, or N.
- Total the number of I marks for the session. The goal counts steps completed independently (target: 5 of 6).
- Use the least intrusive prompt first and record the prompt actually needed.
