Remain with a chosen activity through indoor recess

When to use this goal

For upper elementary students who drift around the room, disrupt others' games, or ask an adult what to do during indoor recess. Base the choice on timed observation. Builds on choosing (fn-lei-001) with a longer, self-directed stretch.

Baseline
Time 4 or more indoor recesses, counting minutes the student was using a chosen activity without adult direction. Note what pulled them away. Start from an interest inventory with the student and family, and offer age-matched choices; a preferred repetitive activity is a valid way to relax, not a problem to fix.
Tips
Switching between chosen activities counts as leisure time; wandering without an activity does not. Keep the menu age-matched and include quiet and active choices.
Limits
Indoor recess happens irregularly; plan a few practice free periods. Does not measure peer play.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, during indoor recess, after choosing from a menu of activities they like, the student will independently remain with a chosen activity, switching on their own to another choice if they want, without adult direction for at least 18 minutes, on 4 of 5 indoor recess periods, as measured by duration recording collected each indoor recess.

Baseline: 5 minutes.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Duration fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Duration recording gives duration data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Leisure & Recreation.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
