Re-enter class mid-lesson after pull-out
When to use this goal
For upper elementary students who return from speech, OT, resource, or counseling and stand at the door, interrupt the teacher, or sit without starting the current task. Present levels decide fit, not grade. Walking to and from the session is a functional routines goal; this one covers re-entering the class.
- Baseline
- Ask each provider when sessions end so returns can be observed. Observe the transition on at least 3 days and mark each step as independent, done with a named prompt (gesture, picture, verbal, physical), or not done. Count only independent steps.
- Tips
- Ask the classroom teacher to post the current task where the student can find it. A standing peer helper should change across the year so no one student carries the job. Catching up on missed work is a separate school independence goal.
- Limits
- Measures re-entry steps, not how much the student learns from the part of the lesson they missed. Return times that vary make data harder to collect; plan with providers.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, when returning to class from a pull-out session while a lesson is under way, the student will complete the steps of re-entering class and joining the current task, performing all 6 steps independently, on 4 of 5 observed returns, as measured by a task-analysis checklist collected at every return from a pull-out session.
Baseline: 2 of 6 steps independently.

- Write the date at the top of each session column. Mark each step I, S, or N.
- Total the number of I marks for the session. The goal counts steps completed independently (target: 6 of 6).
- Use the least intrusive prompt first and record the prompt actually needed.
