Find slope from two points

9-12, 6-8Percent accuracyTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For high school students who can count rise over run on a graph but cannot find slope from two coordinate pairs, or subtract in mixed order. Present levels in integer subtraction and division decide fit.

Baseline
Record errors by type: subtracting in mixed order, flipping the ratio (run over rise), sign errors, and not simplifying. Include negative and zero slopes.
Tips
Checking on a grid links the formula to the picture. The data-graphs-patterns template on graphing a linear relationship covers slope from tables and graphs.
Limits
Undefined slope is not included unless written into the condition. Calculators can mask sign errors.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, given 8 pairs of points with integer coordinates and the slope formula, the student will label the points, substitute into the slope formula, and write the slope in simplest form independently with at least 75% accuracy on slope problems, in 3 of 4 consecutive biweekly probes, as measured by work-sample analysis collected every two weeks.

Baseline: 25% accuracy.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Work-sample analysis gives percent accuracy data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Algebra & Equations.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
