Algebra & Equations IEP goals for high school (grades 9 to 12)
37 of the algebra & equations templates in the library are written for high school (grades 9 to 12). Each opens in the builder, where the grade band is a starting point and the baseline comes from your own assessment.

Algebra & Equations Math
Translate word phrases into algebraic expressions
Variables and expressions
By the annual IEP review date, given 10 word phrases that use one operation and one unknown (such as 7 more than a number), the student will write an algebraic expression with a variable for each phrase independently with at least 80% accuracy on word phrases, in 3 of 4 consecutive weekly probes, as measured by curriculum-based measurement probes collected weekly.
Combine like terms to simplify expressions
Variables and expressions
By the annual IEP review date, given 10 expressions with 3 to 5 terms using one variable and constants, the student will circle or color like terms and write the simplified expression independently with at least 85% accuracy on expressions to simplify, in 3 of 4 consecutive weekly probes, as measured by work-sample analysis collected weekly.
Expand expressions with the distributive property
Variables and expressions
By the annual IEP review date, given 10 expressions of the form a number times a sum or difference in parentheses, with whole numbers, the student will draw arrows from the outside factor to each inside term and write the expanded expression independently with at least 85% accuracy on distributive property expressions, in 3 of 4 consecutive weekly probes, as measured by work-sample analysis collected weekly.
Solve one-step equations with decimals and money
One- and two-step equations
By the annual IEP review date, given 10 one-step equations with decimal values, including money amounts, and a calculator, the student will write the inverse operation, use the calculator to find the value, and write the solution with its units independently with at least 80% accuracy on decimal equations, in 3 of 4 consecutive biweekly probes, as measured by work-sample analysis collected every two weeks.
Solve equations using an undo-steps checklist
One- and two-step equations
By the annual IEP review date, given an equation with a coefficient and a constant on one side (such as 3x + 7 = 22) and a printed undo-steps checklist, the student will solve the equation by working through each item on the undo-steps checklist, performing at least 7 of 8 steps independently, across 3 consecutive weekly probes, as measured by a task-analysis checklist collected weekly.
Set up and solve two-step word problems
Writing equations from word problems
By the annual IEP review date, given a two-step word problem with a starting amount and a rate, and a problem-solving organizer, the student will define the variable, write an equation that models the problem, solve it, and write the answer in a sentence with units independently, earning a score of at least 9 out of 12 on a 4-row equation setup rubric scored 0 to 3 per row, on 3 of 4 consecutive scored problems, as measured by a defined scoring rubric collected every two weeks.
High school algebra & equations goals point toward life after school: independence, self-advocacy, and skills used in courses, jobs, and the community. Conditions name realistic materials and settings, and many goals are written so the student collects part of the data.

Frequently asked questions
How do algebra & equations goals connect to transition planning in high school?
Annual goals should support the student's measurable postsecondary goals for education, employment, and independent living (34 CFR 300.320(b)). A skill goal can be written in the context of a course, a job site, or a daily living routine.
Can a high school student help write their own goals?
Yes, and the student must be invited to IEP meetings where transition is discussed. Student-chosen goals with self-monitoring tend to be measured more consistently.
How are high school goals measured when the student has many teachers?
With work samples, percent of assignments completed, rubrics, or self-monitoring checklists reviewed weekly by the case manager. The goal should say who records the data and where.
