Evaluate expressions with nested grouping symbols

6-8, 9-12Percent accuracyTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For students who evaluate expressions with one set of parentheses but lose track when brackets sit inside parentheses or a fraction bar groups a numerator. Present levels and fact fluency, not grade, decide fit; a calculator may be allowed if computation is not the target.

Baseline
Ask the student to show every step. Tag errors as order errors, sign errors, or fact errors so teaching targets the real gap.
Tips
Rewriting after each step makes errors visible. When using a memory phrase, stress that multiplication and division are done left to right, as are addition and subtraction.
Limits
A correct final value with skipped steps can hide shaky understanding; score the steps if that matters. Does not include negative numbers unless you add them.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, given 12 expressions with nested parentheses and brackets, exponents, and a fraction bar, the student will rewrite the expression after each step, working from the innermost grouping out, and give the final value independently with at least 85% accuracy on multi-step expressions, in 3 of 4 consecutive biweekly probes, as measured by work-sample analysis collected every two weeks.

Baseline: 40% accuracy.

Measurability check11 of 11 met
  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Work-sample analysis gives percent accuracy data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Algebra & Equations.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
