Solve near-doubles facts with a known double
When to use this goal
For students who know doubles (6 + 6) but count on for facts next to them (6 + 7). Present levels in doubles recall decide readiness.
- Baseline
- Check doubles first; the strategy depends on them. Record whether the student uses the smaller double plus one or the larger double minus one; either is correct.
- Tips
- Teach after doubles are steady. Once the strategy is reliable, move these facts into the timed recall probe.
- Limits
- Covers one strategy family. Facts that are not near doubles need other strategies, such as making ten.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, when given a near-doubles fact within 20, such as 7 + 8 or 5 + 6, that the student does not yet recall, the student will name a known double and use it to say or write the answer independently in at least 8 of 10 trials, on 3 of 4 consecutive sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected twice weekly.
Baseline: 2 of 10 opportunities.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives opportunities data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Addition & Subtraction.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Record up to 10 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
