Explain the trade when regrouping

3-5OpportunitiesTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For students who regroup by habit and cannot say what the small 1 means, so they cannot catch their own errors. Present levels in regrouping with blocks and in written regrouping decide readiness.

Baseline
Ask about regrouping in both addition and subtraction. Record answers that name digits only ("I carried the 1") as not yet correct.
Tips
Explaining the trade helps students notice when a regrouping mark is in the wrong place. Accept signs, writing or device-generated speech.
Limits
Explanation depends on expressive language; the frame reduces that load. Does not measure computation accuracy.

What the student will do

Something an adult can see, count or time.

When or under what conditions

Support

Support allowed

Criterion

Number of opportunities in which the behavior is demonstrated, out of a fixed number.

Sample numbers. Replace them with the student's data.

Criterion wording

Data collection

Each planned or naturally occurring opportunity is recorded as correct/independent, prompted, or not demonstrated.

How often data are collected
Mastery rule

How many measurements must meet the criterion.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, after solving a multi-digit addition or subtraction problem with regrouping during small-group instruction, the student will say what was traded using place value words for both units independently in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, on 3 of 4 consecutive sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected weekly.

Baseline: 1 of 5 opportunities.

Measurability check11 of 11 met
  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Addition & Subtraction.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
