Add integers with two-color counters

6-8OpportunitiesTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For students who apply sign rules they half-remember and need a model that shows why -5 + 3 is -2. Present levels in placing integers on a number line decide readiness.

Baseline
Include problems with mixed signs and with the same sign. Record whether errors are in the zero pairs or in the sign of the answer.
Tips
Move from counters to the number line and then to rules in later objectives. The counter model also explains subtracting a negative by adding zero pairs.
Limits
Counters become slow with numbers past 20. Does not measure fluency with integer rules.

How the goal refers to the student

Skill

What the student will do

Something an adult can see, count or time.

Condition

When or under what conditions

Support

Support allowed

Criterion

Number of opportunities in which the behavior is demonstrated, out of a fixed number.

Sample numbers. Replace them with the student's data.

Criterion wording

Data collection

Each planned or naturally occurring opportunity is recorded as correct/independent, prompted, or not demonstrated.

How often data are collected
Mastery rule

How many measurements must meet the criterion.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, given 10 integer addition problems from -10 to 10 and a set of two-color counters, the student will build each problem with counters, remove zero pairs and write the answer independently on at least 9 of 10 items, across 3 consecutive sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected weekly.

Baseline: 3 of 10 opportunities.

Measurability check11 of 11 met
  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Addition & Subtraction.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
