Catch and fix calculator entry errors

9-12, 6-8OpportunitiesTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For students who use a calculator for multi-digit work but accept whatever the display shows, even when a digit was missed or a key was pressed twice. Present levels in calculator use and estimation decide readiness.

Baseline
An opportunity is a problem; mark it correct when the check step is done and any entry error is fixed. Record how many entry errors happen in the first place.
Tips
Calculators with a two-line display make checking easier. The estimation behavior also builds number sense.
Limits
Observation is needed to see the check; a correct final answer alone does not show it.

Skill

What the student will do

Something an adult can see, count or time.

Condition

When or under what conditions

Support

Support allowed

Criterion

Number of opportunities in which the behavior is demonstrated, out of a fixed number.

Sample numbers. Replace them with the student's data.

Criterion wording

Data collection

An adult observes and records the defined behavior during a specified activity.

How often data are collected
Mastery rule

How many measurements must meet the criterion.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, given 10 multi-digit addition and subtraction problems to solve with a calculator during independent work, the student will check the display after each number is entered and clear and re-enter any number that does not match independently in at least 9 of 10 opportunities, on 3 of 4 consecutive observed sessions, as measured by direct observation collected weekly.

Baseline: 3 of 10 opportunities.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Direct observation gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Addition & Subtraction.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
