Tell time to the hour and half hour on an analog clock
When to use this goal
For students who read digital times but cannot read a clock face, or who confuse the hour and minute hands. Present levels in counting by 5s and in numeral recognition to 12 decide readiness.
- Baseline
- Score hour times and half-hour times separately. The usual half-hour error is reading the hour hand as the next number because it sits between two numerals (reading 3:30 as 4:30); note how often it occurs because it decides the instructional focus.
- Tips
- Accept spoken or written responses and note the mode. A geared teaching clock lets the student see the hour hand move as the minute hand goes around, which fixes the half-hour error for many students.
- Limits
- Reading a clock does not show that the student can plan with time or find elapsed time. Students who need time for daily routines may be better served by a digital clock and a schedule-reading goal.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given 10 analog clock faces showing times to the hour and half hour, the student will say or write the time shown on each clock independently with at least 90% accuracy on clock readings, on 3 of 4 consecutive probes, as measured by work-sample analysis collected weekly.
Baseline: 40% accuracy.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Work-sample analysis gives percent accuracy data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Measurement, Time & Money.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Score only items the student attempted unless the goal defines a fixed set of items. Use the same denominator every session.
- Percent = numerator ÷ denominator × 100. Round to one decimal place.
- Record the support actually provided, even if the goal is independent performance.
