Count mixed coins and bills to find the total
When to use this goal
For students who count like coins but cannot switch counts in a mixed set (25, 50, 60, 65, 66). Present levels in counting each coin type alone and in counting on decide the coin mix.
- Baseline
- Watch the process: does the student sort first, start with the largest coin, and switch the count correctly at each coin type? Record where the count goes wrong; the switch from quarters to dimes (25, 50, 60) is the most frequent failure.
- Tips
- Sorting greatest to least is the taught strategy and can stay as a permanent support if needed. Use real coins; plastic coins differ in size and weight and the skill transfers less.
- Limits
- Counting money does not show the student can decide whether there is enough for a purchase; that is a separate goal. Students who will mainly use a debit card may need less of this and more of the budget goal.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given 10 mixed sets of coins totaling less than $1.00, the student will sort the coins from greatest to least value, count on through the set, and state the total independently with at least 85% accuracy on mixed money sets, across 3 consecutive data collection sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected twice weekly.
Baseline: 30% accuracy.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives percent accuracy data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Measurement, Time & Money.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Score only items the student attempted unless the goal defines a fixed set of items. Use the same denominator every session.
- Percent = numerator ÷ denominator × 100. Round to one decimal place.
- Record the support actually provided, even if the goal is independent performance.
