Trade coins for coins of equal value
When to use this goal
For students who name coins and their values but do not see that 5 pennies equal a nickel or 2 dimes and a nickel equal a quarter. Present levels in coin values and in counting by 5s and 10s decide readiness.
- Baseline
- Include trades for a nickel, a dime and a quarter. Record when the student matches by number of coins rather than value.
- Tips
- Trading builds the idea that value, not size or count, matters. It prepares for counting mixed coins.
- Limits
- Does not measure counting mixed sets.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given a coin and a tray of smaller coins, with the direction "show me the same amount with other coins", the student will count out smaller coins equal to the given coin and say that the amounts are the same independently in at least 7 of 8 trials, across 3 consecutive sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected weekly.

- Record up to 8 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
