Time an event with a stopwatch

3-5, 6-8OpportunitiesTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For students who need to time events in science labs or PE and cannot start, stop and read a stopwatch. Present levels in reading digital numbers and decimals to the tenth decide readiness.

Baseline
An opportunity is one event; it is correct when the time is recorded within half a second of an adult's time and written correctly.
Tips
Gives the student a valued role in class activities. Reading 1:05.3 as 65.3 seconds can be a later objective.
Limits
Reaction time affects accuracy; use the half-second rule.

How the goal refers to the student

Skill

What the student will do

Something an adult can see, count or time.

Condition

When or under what conditions

Support

Support allowed

Criterion

Number of opportunities in which the behavior is demonstrated, out of a fixed number.

Sample numbers. Replace them with the student's data.

Criterion wording

Data collection

An adult observes and records the defined behavior during a specified activity.

How often data are collected
Mastery rule

How many measurements must meet the criterion.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, during a science lab or PE activity, given a stopwatch or a phone stopwatch, the student will start the stopwatch at the signal, stop it at the end, and record the time in seconds to the tenth independently in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, on 3 of 4 consecutive sessions, as measured by direct observation collected weekly during labs or PE.

Baseline: 1 of 5 opportunities.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Direct observation gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Measurement, Time & Money.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
