Estimate the change before the cashier gives it

6-8, 9-12OpportunitiesTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For older students who pay with a large bill but have no idea how much change to expect, so they cannot catch errors. Present levels in rounding prices and subtracting from 10 and 20 decide readiness.

Baseline
An estimate is correct when it is within $1 of the actual change. Record the estimate and the change.
Tips
Estimating catches the big errors that matter most. Pairs with counting change received.
Limits
Not a substitute for counting exact change when the amount matters.

How the goal refers to the student

Skill

What the student will do

Something an adult can see, count or time.

Condition

When or under what conditions

Support

Support allowed

Criterion

Number of opportunities in which the behavior is demonstrated, out of a fixed number.

Sample numbers. Replace them with the student's data.

Criterion wording

Data collection

An adult observes and records the defined behavior during a specified activity.

How often data are collected
Mastery rule

How many measurements must meet the criterion.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, when paying for a purchase under $20 with a $10 or $20 bill during a community outing, the student will say about how much change to expect before receiving it, then check the change against the estimate independently in at least 7 of 8 opportunities, across 3 consecutive outings or simulations, as measured by direct observation collected weekly.

Baseline: 2 of 8 opportunities.

Measurability check11 of 11 met
  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Direct observation gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Measurement, Time & Money.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
