Read multi-digit numbers on a timed probe

When to use this goal

For students who read numbers to 100 quickly but slow down or misread larger numbers (reading 3,047 as three hundred forty-seven), which slows every later math task. Present levels in place value to the thousands decide readiness.

Baseline
Use three probes and the median. Score a number correct only if every place is said correctly; record zero errors (saying 3,047 as three thousand four hundred seventy) as a pattern.
Tips
Decide whether "and" is accepted and keep the rule the same. Reading numbers aloud is a quick daily warm-up that also helps with reading word problems and prices.
Limits
Measures reading numbers, not their size or order. Students with speech or reading needs may need a select-the-number version instead.

Criterion

Count of correct responses per minute on a timed task.

Sample numbers. Replace them with the student's data.

Criterion wording

Data collection

A fixed-length timing (for example, 1 or 2 minutes) used to calculate a per-minute rate.

How often data are collected
Mastery rule

How many measurements must meet the criterion.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, given a 1-minute probe of randomly ordered three- and four-digit numbers, including numbers with zeros, the student will read each number aloud using place value names independently at a rate of at least 20 correct responses per minute, in 3 of 4 consecutive weekly probes, as measured by timed probes collected weekly.

Baseline: 9 correct responses per minute.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Rate (per minute) fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Timed probes gives rate (per minute) data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Number Sense.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
