Pick the reasonable answer without computing

When to use this goal

For students who accept any calculator or computed answer, even when it is far off. Present levels in rounding and in estimating sums and products decide readiness.

Baseline
Three-choice items have a one-in-three chance rate. Record the reason given; a correct choice with no reason may be a guess.
Tips
Pair with a calculator goal so the student checks displays. Estimating before calculating (ma-ps-006) is the in-process version.
Limits
Choices make the task easier than producing an estimate.

What the student will do

Something an adult can see, count or time.

When or under what conditions

Criterion

Percent of attempted items answered correctly.

Sample numbers. Replace them with the student's data.

Criterion wording

Data collection

Scoring completed student work (permanent products) against a defined answer key or checklist.

How many measurements must meet the criterion.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, given 10 word problems, each with three answer choices that differ by a factor of about 10, and no paper or calculator, the student will choose the reasonable answer and say how they estimated independently with at least 90% accuracy on reasonableness judgments, on 3 of 4 consecutive probes, as measured by work-sample analysis collected every two weeks.

Baseline: 40% accuracy.

Measurability check11 of 11 met
  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Work-sample analysis gives percent accuracy data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Math Problem Solving.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
