Open lunch items from a six-item probe

When to use this goal

For children who bring or buy lunch and wait for an adult to open most items, losing eating time. A probe with the items the child really gets at lunch, not grade, decides fit.

Baseline
Build the probe from a week of the student's real lunches and score each item as opened alone, opened with a cue, or opened by an adult. Note grip and two-handed use; many packages need one hand to hold while the other pulls.
Tips
Talk with the family: pre-opened or easier packaging is a quick fix alongside teaching. Practice outside lunch so the child does not lose eating time. Milk cartons are often the hardest; teach them last.
Limits
Food textures, liquid thickness, positioning for safe swallowing and any swallowing precautions come from the student's feeding or swallowing plan, which this goal never changes. Some packages are hard for adults too; the probe should reflect real lunches, not the hardest items. Accuracy on a probe does not show speed at real lunch.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, given a probe set of six common lunch items from the student's own lunches (such as a milk carton, a snack bag, a lidded container, a yogurt cup, a fruit cup and a string cheese wrapper), the student will independently open each item so the food or drink can be reached without spilling the contents with at least 80% accuracy on lunch items opened, in 3 of 4 consecutive weekly probes, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected weekly.

Baseline: 30% accuracy.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives percent accuracy data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Feeding & Mealtime Skills.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
