Open and close a sports-cap water bottle

K-2, 3-5OpportunitiesTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For students who bring a water bottle but need an adult to open it, so they drink less during the day. Observed water breaks decide fit.

Baseline
Record five water-bottle uses, noting the cap type and which part was hard (opening, drinking without spilling, closing). Flip caps are often far easier than twist caps.
Tips
Easy access to water matters for comfort and attention. Choosing an easier bottle with the family is a quick fix. Label the bottle so it comes back.
Limits
Food textures, liquid thickness, positioning for safe swallowing and any swallowing precautions come from the student's feeding or swallowing plan, which this goal never changes. Students on fluid or texture restrictions follow the plan for what and how they drink. The goal does not cover refilling.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, during a water break in the classroom, given the student's own water bottle, the student will open the bottle cap, take a drink and close the cap with no adult help in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, on 4 of 5 observed days, as measured by direct observation collected daily at water breaks.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Direct observation gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Feeding & Mealtime Skills.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.
