When to use this goal

For students who cannot keep the cursor on a target, click while moving, or drag without dropping, so digital assignments and assessments need an adult to operate the device. Base the choice on a short trial on the device the student uses in class; the device matters.

Baseline
Present 10 click targets and 10 drag targets on the student's usual device and count correct responses. Compare mouse, trackpad, and touch screen during baseline; many students succeed on one and fail on another, and the condition should name the device that will be used for data.
Tips
Use the same practice program or activity for data so target sizes stay constant. This goal supports access to online testing and digital curriculum; coordinate with the assistive technology team if an adapted input device is being tried.
Limits
Does not cover keyboarding, which is in the handwriting skill as an alternative output. Accuracy on practice targets may not transfer to busy web pages with small links; add a condition with real class software once the practice version is steady.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, given a laptop with a mouse and an on-screen activity with 1-inch targets, the student will independently move the cursor to each target and click without moving off the target with at least 90% accuracy on targets selected or dragged correctly, across 3 consecutive weekly sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected weekly during a computer-based activity.

Baseline: 40% accuracy.

Measurability check11 of 11 met
  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives percent accuracy data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Fine Motor Skills.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
