Cut card stock, felt, and yarn for projects

3-5, 6-8OpportunitiesTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For students who cut paper well but stall on thicker or soft materials used in art and projects (card stock, felt, yarn, foam sheets). Fit depends on a trial with each material, not grade. Use sharp, good-quality scissors; dull ones make everyone fail.

Baseline
Test each material with five cuts. Felt and yarn often fail because the helper hand does not hold them taut. Record the scissors used.
Tips
Spring-loaded scissors are a reasonable accommodation. Pre-cutting is fine when the art goal is something else. This extends mt-fm-004 and mt-fm-005 to real project materials.
Limits
Does not measure cutting accuracy on curves. Sharp scissors need supervision with some students.

Criterion

Number of opportunities in which the behavior is demonstrated, out of a fixed number.

Sample numbers. Replace them with the student's data.

Data collection

Each planned or naturally occurring opportunity is recorded as correct/independent, prompted, or not demonstrated.

Mastery rule

How many measurements must meet the criterion.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, given sharp scissors and a felt piece with a marked line, the student will cut through the material along the line with no tearing and no more than one restart independently in at least 4 of 5 trials, across 3 consecutive weekly sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected weekly during art or project work.

Baseline: 1 of 5 opportunities.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Fine Motor Skills.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
