Lift and carry boxes with safe body mechanics

When to use this goal

For transition-age students in stocking, warehouse, or school jobs who bend at the waist, twist while lifting, or carry loads away from the body. Safe lifting protects the back for a working life. Fit depends on job-site observation, not grade.

Baseline
Score three lifts per session for two sessions. Note box weights; the target weight should match the job and the student's strength.
Tips
Many workplaces teach the same steps; matching their wording helps. Pair with job-site goals in transition or vocational areas.
Limits
Weight limits need PT and medical input. Does not measure work speed.

Criterion

Number of routine steps performed independently.

Sample numbers. Replace them with the student's data.

Task-analysis steps

Write each step so an observer can mark it done or not done.

Data collection

A routine is broken into ordered steps; each step is recorded as independent, supported, or not completed.

How many measurements must meet the criterion.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, during a work task lifting boxes of 5 to 15 pounds from the floor to a table, the student will lift and carry each box following the safe lifting steps, performing all 6 steps independently, across 4 consecutive work sessions, as measured by a task-analysis checklist collected each work session, scoring 3 lifts.

Baseline: 2 of 6 steps independently.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Task-analysis steps fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Task-analysis checklist gives task-analysis steps data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Gross Motor Skills.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
