Write a dictated sentence legibly

K-2, 3-5Percent accuracyTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For students who write legibly when copying but whose handwriting breaks down when they must hold a sentence in mind and write it, as in spelling tests and dictation. Base the choice on a dictation probe scored for legibility (not spelling).

Baseline
Dictate three sentences of similar length and have a second adult read each word; count a word as legible if that reader names it without guessing, regardless of spelling. Compare with a copying sample to confirm the breakdown is specific to dictation.
Tips
Weekly spelling tests give a built-in probe; score legibility separately from spelling. Use sentences with words the student can spell so that spelling does not drive the score. Dictating in phrases is a support that fades to a single reading.
Limits
Legibility judgments vary; use the same second reader. Does not measure composing; students who write legibly from dictation but not in free writing need the paragraph legibility template.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, given a 6 to 8 word sentence dictated once and repeated on request, the student will write the sentence with each word legible to a reader unfamiliar with the student's writing independently with at least 90% accuracy on words written legibly, on 3 consecutive weekly dictation probes, as measured by work-sample analysis collected weekly on a dictated sentence.

Baseline: 50% accuracy.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Work-sample analysis gives percent accuracy data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Handwriting.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
