Type at a rate of words per minute on a keyboard
When to use this goal
For students whose handwriting is too slow or illegible for the length of written work expected, and for whom the team has chosen keyboarding as the primary output. A one-minute typing timing during baseline gives the rate; it should be compared with the student's handwriting rate to confirm keyboarding is the faster route.
- Baseline
- Run three 3-minute timings from a printed paragraph and count correct words per minute (words with any typo do not count). Record whether the student hunts and pecks; a hunt-and-peck rate can be respectable but usually plateaus, so note the method. Compare with the handwriting rate on a similar task.
- Tips
- Pair with the word-processing template so the skill is used for real assignments, not only in the typing program. Many typing programs report rate automatically; use the same program and passage difficulty every week. Keyboarding is a legitimate output for written assignments and should be listed as an accommodation while the rate builds.
- Limits
- Rate on a copied passage overstates real composing speed. Does not measure spelling or editing. Students with significant motor needs may do better with word prediction, dictation, or an alternative keyboard, and the assistive technology team should be involved.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given a 3-minute timing and a printed paragraph to type on a laptop (total divided by 3 for the per-minute rate), the student will type the text using the taught finger placement independently at a rate of at least 20 correct words per minute, in 3 of 4 consecutive weekly timings, as measured by timed probes collected weekly on a 3-minute typing timing.
Baseline: 8 correct words per minute.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Rate (per minute) fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Timed probes gives rate (per minute) data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Handwriting.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
