Recall and form dictated lowercase letters

K-2, 3-5Percent accuracyTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For students who form lowercase letters well when copying but cannot produce them when a letter is named, which slows spelling and writing. Fit depends on a dictation probe, not grade. The goal is retrieving and forming the letter, not spelling.

Baseline
Dictate all 26 letters over two short sessions and score each as correct, reversed, wrong letter, or not written. Note slow letters too; hesitation shows a retrieval gap.
Tips
Pair with mt-hw-003 (lowercase formation from a model). Letters named by sound tie the skill to spelling. Keep dictation brisk.
Limits
Mixes memory and motor skill; check copying first. Not a spelling measure.

Original IEP Atlas template based on general measurement principles; not copied from any goal bank. ID mt-hw-032.

Each planned or naturally occurring opportunity is recorded as correct/independent, prompted, or not demonstrated.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, when the adult names 15 lowercase letters in random order and the student writes each on lined paper, the student will write each named lowercase letter with correct formation and orientation independently with at least 90% accuracy on dictated lowercase letters, across 3 consecutive weekly probes, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected weekly.

Baseline: 50% accuracy.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives percent accuracy data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Handwriting.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
