Form dictated letters quickly in 1-minute probes

K-2, 3-5Rate (per minute)TemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For students who know their letters but write them so slowly that spelling and writing stall while they think about each letter. Fast, correct letter writing frees attention for ideas. Fit depends on a timed probe, not grade.

Baseline
Run three probes and use the median. Use a set dictation pace and keep it the same over the year. Count only readable, correctly formed letters.
Tips
Short daily practice of letter writing from dictation builds speed. Pair with mt-hw-032 (accuracy of dictated letters) when accuracy is still low.
Limits
Dictation pace limits the top score; agree on it. Not a measure of sentence writing.

Skill

What the student will do

Something an adult can see, count or time.

Condition

When or under what conditions

Support

Support allowed

Criterion

Count of correct responses per minute on a timed task.

Sample numbers. Replace them with the student's data.

Criterion wording

Data collection

A fixed-length timing (for example, 1 or 2 minutes) used to calculate a per-minute rate.

How often data are collected
Mastery rule

How many measurements must meet the criterion.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, during a 1-minute probe in which the adult dictates lowercase letters in random order every few seconds, the student will write each dictated letter with correct formation before the next one is called independently at a rate of at least 18 letters correct per minute, on 3 of 4 consecutive weekly probes, as measured by timed probes collected weekly.

Baseline: 8 letters correct per minute.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Rate (per minute) fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Timed probes gives rate (per minute) data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Handwriting.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
